7 Ways to Support Your Friends Who Aren’t Drinking

It’s a matter of putting yourself in their shoes to consider to how your words and actions might affect them. If they tell you outright something is making them uncomfortable, simply apologize and change subjects. Sean also adds that sober hangouts are better when you don’t make a big deal of the fact that you are doing it on purpose. Going to wine tasting after wine tasting as a nondrinker is likely to get old fast, so consider mixing up your outings with other activities as well.

Be mindful of how you talk about drinking around them

With enough repetition and strong enough rewarding experiences, alcohol use becomes more and more automatic over time. There is something delicious about our first taste of alcohol, although not in a literal sense. The truth is that most of us squint at biofeedback our first sips until we learn to acquire the taste over time. But the deliciousness does not have to come from the taste—it comes from the feelings. With two party tricks up its sleeve, alcohol has its way to help us feel good, at least temporarily.

It’s not just your drinking buddies and drug dealers who can get you into trouble—sometimes those who are closest to you can contribute to a relapse. Other definitions, however, often focus on the process of recovery and developing coping mechanisms and habits that support health and wellness over the long term. Total abstinence may be the goal, but the reality is that setbacks are common. In addition, when out at bars or restaurants, consider ordering non-alcoholic drinks instead of water.

Give yourself permission to need support

Sometimes boredom in sobriety looks like not wanting to be around anyone. Your friends are out getting drunk, the same as they always do. Meanwhile, you’re at home wondering how many days it would take someone to find your body after you’ve choked on those peanut M&M’s you’ve been knocking back during your latest Netflix binge. That being said, drinking FOMO is real and must be dealt with. Sometimes admitting the truth to yourself is the first step. So many people quit drinking and end up walking around in a dopamine deficit state, struggling to find joy in anything.

To Drink or Not to Drink Around Sober People

The recovering person has a responsibility to take care of themselves, but family and friends can definitely help. So with the three-fold trilogy of the holiday season upon us, as many reach for a drink, let’s also remember to reach out to each other, especially those in recovery. In treatment settings, we attempt facts about moderate drinking to teach our patients who suffer from an alcohol use disorder to cope with the realities of an alcohol-infused world. Just like any other illness from which people can suffer, it is ultimately the responsibility of the individual themselves to learn about how to manage the illness and keep it in remission.

Frustrating Ways Alcohol Makes You Gain Weight

When I finally walked away from booze at 34, my life opened up. I can honestly say sobriety is the best thing I have ever done for myself. This can include toxic relationships in which you feel unheard, misunderstood, unsupported, demeaned, unsafe, and/or attacked. Relapse (using substances again after stopping) can and does happen, with 85% of people experiencing relapse at least once and half of them doing so within the first two weeks of sobriety. One study found that 68% of people treated in a detox unit experienced moderate alcohol withdrawal symptoms. You can expect certain alcohol withdrawal symptoms such as sleep disruption to occur, though some people can experience seizures and other severe symptoms. Some studies find that this structure, along with a start date for sobriety and milestones, is important to some people in recovery.

We will also discuss ways of preparing for social interactions as a non-drinker and the benefits of having go-to responses ready. My biggest fears in life include being in large groups of strange people, standing at parties by myself, and really just people in general. Drunk me didn’t have to worry if I was alone at a party because drunk me didn’t abide such things. Drunk me didn’t worry if she belonged, or said the right thing, or had to have small talk because drunk me just handled that. This might seem like a terrible thing; this is not a terrible thing.
